We have successfully proven the feasibility of the idea. A system for generating air bubbles a small as 150um was developed. We were capable of detecting bubbles in the artificial blood vessels and in the artificial soft tissue. The electrical signals measured on the PZT were correlated to the size of the bubbles (a) Papers published in peer-reviewed journals (N/A for none) Enter List of papers submitted or published that acknowledge ARO support from the start of the project to the date of this printing. Probability of decompression sickness in no-stop air diving and subsaturation diving.
Probabilistic models allow estimation of the probability (Pdcs) that decompression sickness (DCS) will occur in any particular dive. Our objective is to provide Pdcs estimates for no-stop diving instructions used by the U.S. Navy and various other navies. To do so, we develop statistics-based (probabilistic) and intuition-based (deterministic) models using dive-outcome data from the U.S. Navy D...

متن کاملAseptic bone necrosis among U.S. Navy divers: survey of 934 nonrandomly selected personnel.
Nine hundred thirty-four U.S. Navy divers were selected and surveyed radiographically using standard techniques developed for detecting aseptic bone necrosis (ABN). X rays were read by qualified radiologists. A total of 16 positive cases was detected, and another 11 were interpreted as doubtful. ABN was found to be related to age and number of months in diving. After controlling for these facto...
متن کاملCerebral gas embolism absorption during hyperbaric therapy: theory.
Cerebral gas embolism is a serious consequence of diving. It is associated with decompression sickness and is assumed to cause severe neurological dysfunction. A mathematical model previously developed to calculate embolism absorption time based on in vivo bubble geometry is used in which various conditions of hyperbaric therapy are considered. Effects of varying external pressure and inert gas...
متن کاملDecompression tables and dive-outcome data: graphical analysis.
We compare outcomes of experimental air dives with prescriptions for ascent given by various air decompression tables. Among experimental dives compiled in the U.S. Navy Decompression Database, many profiles that resulted in decompression sickness (DCS) have longer total decompression times (TDTs, defined as times spent at decompression stops plus time to travel from depth to the surface) than ...
